Will re-entry of Chandra Babu Naidu change politics of Telangana?

Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu is in the news all over again after the shocking tie-up of TDP with Congress party for the coming Telangana 2018 Assembly Elections. The TDP party was founded in 1982 by famous actor Nandamuri Tarak Rama Rao also called as NTR against the Congress party. All these 36 years, these two parties have always been fighting head to head. This is the first time they have formed an alliance after the geography of earlier state of Andhra Pradesh changed, resulting in two new states. This tie-up was done to counter K Chandrasekhar Rao's TRS party which is ruling the Telangana State and is the strongest party of the state. Although there is a head to head fight between these two Chief Ministers, once upon a time they both originally were Congress party leaders and left the party later.

Telangana is definitely not a new area for Chandra Babu Naidu. With him, the TDP has fought 7 state elections so far in the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh. Also when Chandrababu Naidu was the Chief Minister Andhra Pradesh from 1995-2004, his party won the Hyderabad Municipal Elections and present TRS leader Teegala Krishna Reddy became the Mayor then. TDP party has produced a lot of big leaders in Telangana like Revanth Reddy, Erraballi Dayakar Rao, Kadiam Srihari etc, although most of these leaders have jumped into other parties. During his term, there were many developments in educational institutions like Engineering colleges and Hi-tech city in Hyderabad. He was also accused to have developed Hyderabad the capital city a lot and ignored the villages.

After the recent tie-up with Congress and CPI, Chandrababu is said to be actively involved in Telangana politics. He is said to have been reading political developments through Andhra Pradesh DGP, for which the TRS party complained before the Governor of both state ESL Narsimhan. Also Rahul Gandhi has given bigger role in the
alliance to Chandrababu to take care of Telangana Elections. Although he may not be an eloquent speaker like YS Rajasekhar Reddy, ex CM of AP or KCR, but he is considered to be a great strategist. KCR & the TRS party are disturbed on his latest movements. As a Chief Minister of a state, he will be having lots of police forces along
with him during the Telangana Election campaign. Some political observers believe that this would help the Congress-TDP alliance as police plays a very important role in any elections.

Chandrababu has an old feud with KCR. After Chandrababu took over the party from NTR by a coup in 1995, he became the supreme leader of TDP and KCR was sidelined, later KCR had to lose ministry after 1999 election. It is said that due to such incidents, KCR started the Telangana movement in 2001. KCR along with Congress fought in Andhra Pradesh in 2004 elections and defeated Chandrababu Naidu. Although KCR and Chandrababu tied-up for the 2009 Assembly elections for the Maha-kutami, they later distanced themselves. It is also said if Telangana state was not formed, Chandrababu would have become the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh again in 2014 due to political failure of Congress party. Another reason for the anger can be banning of media especially ABN channel in 2014 by KCR, as ABN is owned by Mr Radha Krishna who is close to Chandra Babu Naidu. In the Cash-for-Votes case in Telangana, where some TDP party leaders are accused, Chandrababu
Naidu was also accused of being a conspirator with them, and media reports speculated his arrest.

Although we have not seen such combination in Andhra and Telangana elections before, we have to wait and watch how the game unfolds in the coming months. Although TDP collapsed in Telangana after 2014, whether it will become a strong supporter of Congress and win the state, is a question unanswered.
